Returning to the very essence of the legendary SSL bus compressor, the Bus Comp Classic returns in a dedicated 1U format, remaining faithful to the sound and focused workflow of the original while expanding its creative scope with Variable VCA Drive, extended ratios and time constants, and a true external stereo sidechain input.

High-Performance THAT 2181 VCAs
At the heart of the Bus Comp Classic are high-performance THAT 2181 VCAs integrated into the audio path, combined with SSL’s unique sidechain architecture, which incorporates a VCA into its feedback loop. Together, they create the signature response that has made the SSL bus compressor a studio staple, combining punch, movement, and cohesion with exceptional musicality. Whether it’s a subtle gain reduction or more aggressive bus processing, transients remain defined yet controlled, while the various elements begin to move and breathe in unison.
Designed without compromise, the Bus Comp Classic offers a faithful recreation of the response and feel of the SSL bus compressor, with the precision, consistency, and reliability expected of modern SSL analog hardware.


Variable VCA Control
The new variable VCA control extends the capabilities of the Bus Comp Classic far beyond a simple sonic signature, bringing together decades of SSL console character into a single continuous control. When the VCA control is set to its “cleanest” position, the VCAs operate in a symmetrical configuration to deliver the low-distortion clarity and powerful transient response associated with SSL’s SuperAnalogue™ generation, from the 9000 Series to today’s Oracle and Odyssey consoles. As soon as the control is engaged, the VCAs operate in an asymmetric configuration, recreating the harmonic behavior and character of classic SSL designs such as the FX384 and 4000 series consoles. As you gradually increase the setting, more color and saturation are introduced, ranging from a subtle, console-like richness to a denser, more aggressive character associated with the early 4K Series designs.
Whether you’re fine-tuning a mix, adding heavy saturation to drums, or applying parallel compression approaching 10% THD, the “Variable VCA Drive” lets you decide the degree of purity, coloration, or aggressiveness of the compressor.


Classic control. More musicality
The Bus Comp Classic retains the SSL Attack, Release, and Ratio controls, which have become indispensable in professional bus compression. These take the form of six-position switches, allowing for quick operation, precise recall, and reproducible results. Additional settings for Ratio and Release expand the compressor’s creative palette, offering greater control and flexibility while preserving the speed and immediacy of the classic SSL workflow.
Each compression ratio has its own carefully defined behavior. The renowned 2:1 mode offers an exceptionally smooth “soft-knee” response, providing gradual gain reduction for transparent processing of the mix bus. Higher ratios offer increasingly assertive control and greater density, making them equally effective on stems, drum buses, and parallel chains.
Much more than just an additional release setting, the SSL Auto Release has a character all its own. Its two-stage, program-dependent release circuit reacts dynamically to signal variations: it releases the loudest elements of the signal more quickly, while allowing the quieter elements to recover more gradually. The result is a natural, musical release character that preserves movement, detail, and control, making “Auto” mode particularly effective on complex signals.

Modern Side-Chain Control
A highly precise, six-position side-chain high-pass filter gives you greater control over the compressor’s response to low-frequency signals. By reducing the influence of bass-heavy elements on the detector circuit, the kick drum and bass can retain their depth and impact without causing excessive gain reduction on the rest of the mix.
The true stereo external side-chain input supports both creative processing and advanced delivery workflows. When exporting individual tracks, the full mix can feed the side-chain while each track passes separately through the audio path. Each track thus benefits from the same gain reduction behavior it experienced within the full mix, helping to preserve the balance and dynamics of the approved production across different versions and deliverables.
